Imphal, December 07 2024:
In view of the hardships faced by people of Tamenglong and Noney in accessing legal services, the Rongmei Naga People's Organization (RNPO) has appealed the authority concerned to open Tamenglong Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court for 15 days in Tamenglong and 15 days in Imphal.
Speaking to media persons during a press briefing at Manipur Press Club today, Ashinpou Gangmei, spokesperson, RNPO, asserted that the protracted conflict between the Meiteis and Kukis has affected other communities of the State.
The conflict has made it almost impossible for Meiteis to venture into hill areas.
As a result, the Tamenglong CJM court is unable to function properly causing immense troubles to the Rongmei community in Noney and Tamenglong, maintained Ashinpou Gangmei.
As majority of judges and lawyers are Meiteis, their inability to travel to the hill areas has posed a great challenge for the citizens fighting court cases and trying to get justice.
Due to this predicament, cases are instead heard in Imphal which creates another difficulty for the people of Tamenglong who can barely afford the travel and lodging expenses, added Ashinpou Gangmei.
After braving such financial challenges and travelling to Imphal, sometimes the hearings are postponed.
Notably RNPO had already sent a letter to the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court on March 11, 2024 requesting for resumption of Tamenglong CJM court for alternate 15 days in Tamenglong and Imphal, he informed.
Additionally, Thuingamlung Phaomei, general secretary of RNPO, submitted an application on December 6 to the Public Information Office, High Court of Manipur under RTI Act 2005 demanding information about the dysfunction of district session courts in the State.
