Imphal, September 06 2012:
The 12 hour bandh called by the North East Students' Organisation (NESO) all over the North East region in protest against assault and treatment of North East people as second class citizens in mainland India had a crippling effect in the State.
The bandh was enforced in Manipur by AMSU which is a constituent member of NESO.
Altogether 25 vehicles which defied the bandh were damaged, nine bandh supporters, including seven members of AMSU, were pulled up by police.
On account of the bandh which came into effect from 5 am today, all the major commercial centres of the State bore deserted looks.
There was little vehicular movement on all important roads.
In addition to deploying large number of security personnel at strategic points, flying squads were formed and put on ROP duty to thwart untoward incidents.
Yet, bandh supporters smashed around 25 vehicles and deflated wheels of many vehicles which defied the bandh at different parts of the State.

Likewise, both Paona Keithel and Thangal Keithel remained shut.
All kinds of passenger carriers stayed off roads and all educational institutions were closed for the day.
However flight service was not affected.
Attendance in Government offices was low.
Groups of bandh supporters came out on the streets and openly enforced the bandh at different places in all the four valley districts including Jiribam sub-division.
But the bandh had little impact in the hill districts with the exception of Churachandpur district.
Meanwhile, the AMSU has conveyed gratitude to the people of Manipur for making the bandh a success.
