Centre okays composite regional centre

The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has given its approval to set up a composite regional centre at Takyel Blind School complex, claimed Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai adding that the centre would provide a new hope and multiple benefits to disabled persons of the State.
Mirabai was speaking at the opening function of a three-day State level camp on empowerment of women in Manipur being organised by the Manipur State Women Development Corporation (MSWDC) at the training hall of Rural Women and Children Development Welfare Association, Taobungkhok, Imphal West today.
Embroidery and tailoring machines were also distributed at the inaugural function to selected beneficiaries who have completed a training module of six months.
Mirabai said that the Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister approved a proposal for establishment of a composite regional centre in Manipur during a meeting of Social Welfare Ministers held at Delhi on August 22-23 .
Due process of land survey for establishment of the composite regional centre is being done by a team of the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped.
Disabled persons can pursue up to Degree courses in different categories once the composite regional centre is established.
The centre would be highly beneficial and provide a new hope to around 51,000 disabled persons of the State.
She said that the camp was being organised in view of the growing need for empowerment of women as they can no longer confine themselves inside their houses but have to take active part in myriad socio-political issues of the society.
Women have been taking pro-active roles in many social issues apart from contributing significantly in the socio-economic development of the State.
She cited the Meira Paibi movement as well as the current mass movement for ILPS where thousands of women have been taking active roles.
Mirabai called upon all the womenfolk to shed the outdated mentality of being subservient or dependent.
Later, the Minister distributed embroidery and tailoring machines to 100 selected, trained beneficiaries.
Social Welfare OSD S Chhabra, Joint Secretary H Rupachanda, Disabled Commissioner L Ibomcha, National Institute for Hearing Handicapped Assistant Director Lanu Wanboy Aimol and many officials of Social Welfare Department were also present at the function.
