Imphal, April 04 2013:
The verification process being carried out by the Joint Verification Team led by Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul district for rehabilitation of the villagers of Chadong in Ukhrul district and Lamlai Khunnou in Imphal East, who would be affected when Mapithel Dam is constructed, has been strongly denounced by the villagers.
To demonstrate their resentment over the ongoing verification process, a sit-in-protest was staged by villagers of Riha, Ramrei and Thoyi in Riha village in defiance of the restriction clamped under CrPC 144 in the area today.
As a part of the agitation, effigies of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and MLA Victor Keishing were also burnt down.

The protestors were seen using placards and festoons which read, "No verification without review", "the process of verification cannot be done forcefully", "Do justice", during the protest demonstration.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the protest, L Aleng, a villager of Riha village, recalled that before commencement of the construction process of Mapithel Dam, the Government had pledged not to hurt the life of the people and the fishes in the river.
However, after the construction process has started and when it is in near completion stage, the government has broken all its earlier promises.
Aleng urged the concerned authority to revive the Expert Review Committee and help the villagers who have been affected by the Dam to live a new and peaceful life.
