"Adopt scientific methods to increase yield, overcome State's dependence on imported fish"

In order to overcome the State's dependence on imported fish, fisher folks should adopt scientific methods and increase their yield, said Professor Deepak Nath, Deputy Director, Directorate of Extension Education, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal.
He was speaking at the commencement of the three-day training programme on "Grow-Our Culture of Minor Carps and Barbs" under SCSP programme held at the training hall of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Imphal East today.
The programme was jointly organised by KVK Imphal East, Directorate of Extension education and CAU, Imphal.
Addressing the gathering, he shared that as locally produced fish is not enough to meet the demand, large quantities of fish are imported mostly from Hyderabad.
The same is witnessed in other north eastern states such as Assam and Nagaland, he added.
Stating that Manipur has a lot of resources for fish production, he maintained that with the resources like ponds, lakes etc there is a need to adopt scientific methods to increase fish yield.
Highlighting the need for scientific knowledge among fish farmers, he said that traditional fish farming methods are still prevalent but switching to scientific methods will increase their income.
Meanwhile, Sagolshem Chandra Meetei, chief of Andro Khul, underscored the hardships faced by fish farmers of Andro who hail from economically backward households.
He expressed gratitude at the prospect of the fish farmers receiving Government's assistance.
Additionally, Professor Dr Th Robindro, Deputy Director Extension and Dr Y Prabhabati, Head and Senior Scientist, KVK Imphal also spoke on the occasion.
Altogether, 30 fish farmers are participating in the three-day training programme.
