Imphal, August 02 2015:
Apart from Joumol where all the dwelling houses were razed to ground by massive landslides, six other nearby villages have also been affected by landslides and the villagers have fled to safer places.
Speaking to some media persons today, Chandel ADC Member Limkhojam Haokip said that landslides which occurred at different places since August 1 affected six other villages and people of these villages have left their homes for safer places.
Five houses of Wayang village located within Tolbung DCC of Chandel ADC have been razed to ground by a landslide and people are apprehensive that other houses may also be swept away.
Fearing devastating landslides in the wake of heavy rainfall for days, all the people of Toitung village having 28 households, Vijangphai village having 25 households, Tuyang village having 40 households, P Chehjang village having 35 households and Moltuk village having 50 households have left their homes for safer places.
Altogether 25 houses of Holenjang have been damaged by landslide though there was no human casualty, according to the ADC Member.
He also appealed to the Government to provide immediate relief materials to all the people affected by landslides.
He further appealed for rehabilitation of all the people displaced by natural disasters.
Tolbung DCC is located at the farthest end of Tengnoupal-New Somtal road but people living there have been facing severe difficulties because the road has been cut off due to landslides at different points.
Although BRTF constructed the road since three/four years back it was not constructed according to guidelines and it only multiplied the woos of villagers, he alleged.
Limkhojam Haokip urged the Government to monitor the way how BRTF has been maintaining the road.
While expressing deep pain over the Joumol disaster, MLA Nunghlung Victor prayed for speedy recovery of all the injured victims.
Eight of the injured victims safely reached Sugnu today, said the MLA while regretting his inability to reach out to the affected people on account of bad or crippled transport infrastructure.
He further urged the Government to construct a suspension bridge over Chakpi river for better connectivity.
