Imphal, April 02 2013:
President of Manipur People's Party (MPP), N Sovakiran has maintained that decognition of the oldest regional party in the state by Election Commission of India (ECI) won't affect its organizational structure and MPP would authomatically get the recognition soon after regaining the trust and confidence of the people.
Under the Election Symbol Reservation and Allotment-1965 (6) sub Clause II of ECI guidelines, the election governing body passed the derecognize order of the oldest regional party of Manipur on March 20 .
As per the guideline, ECI derecognizes MPP as none of its candidate had won the last State Assembly election held 2012 and the Lok Sabha election held in 2009.In fact, MPP was able to get only 4.01% of the total number of voters in the last State assembly election.
But the newly appointed MPP chief asserted that except for a ban on using party's symbol, there would be no cancellation of the registration of MPP by ECI.
Moreover, MPP would not merge with any other political party, Sovakiran added.
He explained that post-election, derecognition of regional parties is a common phenomenon all over the country.
After the all the MPP legislators merged with Janata Dal in 1977, ECI derecognized the party.
However, it was later recognized in 1979 when the party filed a case against the ECI order.
Sovakiran expressed confidence that MPP would regain its lost sheen.
As the oldest regional political party, MPP has ruled the state for three terms- 1972, 1974 and 1990 and so it would automatically re-recognize it after fulfilling the all the criteria given under the ECI guidelines in the upcoming elections.
Informing that Manipur State Congress Party candidate from Andro A/C in 2012 Assembly election Md Jalaludin Shah and his workers have joined MPP on Monday, Sovakiran said that despite weakening of the strength of the party, some of its previous leaders and associates have returned to work together.
In a process of strengthening the party, decisions to form new committees on election, working and disciplinary as well as frontal organisations for youths, Chanura and Loumi would be taken up during the ensuing central committee conference which falls on April 7, Sovakiran disclosed.
