World Wetland Day observed at Bishnupur

As observed globally, World Wetland Day was observed today at the complex of Phubala Inland Watersports, Bishnupur.
The programme jointly organised by Loktak View-Point Development Organization and the Evergreen Social & Health Development Organization under the aegis of Loktak Development Authority(LDA) was attended by Project Director, LDA Manipur, L Bhagaton Singh as chief guest, president Sangai Protection Forum, Tongbram Budhi Singh as functional president and Principal Kumbi College cum honorary Wildlife Warden Bishnupur, K Jugeshwor Singh and Principal Mangolnganbi College cum State Co-ordinator Indian Bird Conservation Network, RK Birjit Singh as guests of honour.
At the observance, L Bhagaton said that protection of Loktak Lake which is considered as the mirror of Manipur, lies in the hands of every Manipuri people, particularly those residing near the lake.
As the Government don't levy a tax on fishing from Loktak Lake, people should not use destructive methods to catch fishes from the lake, he said and added that practising of electric or battery fishing also harm other aquatic plants and animals, apart from stunning the fishes.
He then urged all to protect Loktak Lake which is the source of income for many people.
As part of the observance, a spot painting competition for Class V to X students from Bishnupur was conducted under the theme "Wetlands and Biodiversity" .
Bikesh Ngangom of Gandha Memorial English School Phubala; S Gururaj Singh of Ereima English Academy and Ph Princi Devi of LCM High School Moirang bagged the first, second and third position respectively.
The top three winners were encouraged with cash prizes of Rs 7000; Rs 5000 and 3000 along with certificates.
The All Loktak Lake Areas Fishermen's Union Manipur and Loktak Fishers Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd also observed the day at Champu Khangpok Floating Village.
