Imphal, November 30 2012:
Representatives of the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur Valley have met Governor Gurbachan Jagat today on matters pertaining to the demand for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribe list.
On the appeal of the committee, Governor Gurbachan Jagat has assured to lend assistance towards the realisation of the demand.
Speaking to media persons at Uripok Lai Khutlembi Mandop, a representative of the STDCMV, Yumnam Mohendro said that the Meitei/Meetei community deems fit to be identified as scheduled tribe.
Since Meetei/Meiteis, with Mongoloid physical features, are the foremost settlers of Manipur and sections of them practising animism though some are absorbed in Hinduism, there is no reason that the community should not be included in the ST lists of the Constitution, said Mohendro.
Y Mohendro also espoused that the people of the State would coexist peacefully when all the people of the State share equal social status.
