Ukhrul, September 30 2020:
Although the Ukhrul District Hospital has been upgraded to 100 bedded hospital to ensure all the basic health services and facilities in the district are met, yet the absence of an anaesthetist has hindered any surgical operation in the district.
According to a source available to this correspondent, yesterday a 28-years-old man from Peh village in Ukhrul district was admitted to the district hospital with a complaint of pain at his abdomen.
The doctor after investigation, diagnosed the patient with hollow viscus organ perforation (intestinal perforation) and is said to be in a critical condition.

The surgeon, who treated the patient could have performed the operation in the hospital itself, however due to the non-availability of an aneathetist in the hospital, the patient had to be referred to RIMS or JNIMS in Imphal.
Meanwhile, Dr Reisangmi, Medical Superintendent of District Hospital, Ukhrul informed that the State Health Department issued an order of posting one aneathetist on September 17 but the anaesthetist is yet to join duty at the hospital.
The reason for the anaesthetist not joining duty is still not known.
Dr Reisangmi said, once the anaesthetist arrives at the hospital, surgical operations can be performed in the district hospital.
This will relieve the burden of the local peoples at large.
Seeing the irresponsible nature of the anaesthetist, the MS has already drafted a letter and it will be submited to higher authority demanding strict action.
Some doctors, under the condition of anonymity, expressed their feeling of embarrassment as they could not perform surgery as well as open OPD for gynaecology department.
They also said that they regretted failing to serve the people in emergency situations.
Meanwhile, the people of Ukhrul have also expressed their dismay on the anaesthetist's act of not joining duty.
The people of Ukhrul feels that the anaesthetist is playing with the life of poor rural people by deliberately derelicting his/her duty.
Also paying no heed to the Government's order is a serious concern, they added.
People demanded the higher authority to initiate strict action against the erring doctor.
