Imphal, December 31 2021:
The Special Judge NIA Manipur has on Friday rejected the bail application filed by Narengbam Samarjit Singh.
The order was announced today after it was kept reserved on December 28 last.
During the hearing on December 28, Special PP NIA submitted that a case was registered against Narengbam Samarjit and Yambem Biren for announcing the formation of Manipur State Council on October 10, 2019 at Lamphel police station.
N Samarjit and Y Biren declared themselves as "external affairs & defense minister" and "chief minister" of the Manipur State Council and sought asylum in the United Kingdom.
The defence counsel submitted that the charge levied against accused (N Samarjit) of collecting huge amounts of money from the depositors/investors of Salai Group of Companies before going to London is baseless.
The defence counsel also alleged the accused returned to India to face the charge as he has no intention to abscond.
The Special PP, on the other hand, submitted that the accused announced separation of Manipur from India in October 2019 and declared himself as "external affairs & defense minister" of the Council.
Narengbam Samarjit also made a website, www.independentmanipur.com and the same was inaugurated by Yambem Biren Singh, the Special PP said and added that the investigative agency had examined several witnesses, apart from seizing incriminating documents.
After completion of the investigation and collecting sufficient prosecutable evidence, a charge sheet was submitted against Narengbam Samarjit and other accused on March 23, 2021 before the Special Court.
The Court after hearing both counsels rejected the bail application.
