Imphal, December 30 2024:
Left parties viz; CPI, CPI(M), RSP and Forward Bloc today commemorated the Chinga Session of 1938 and staged a protest to protect democracy and federalism.
Apart from commemorating the Chinga Session, Manipur units of CPI and Left parties joined a Nation-wide protest against the growing challenges to democracy and federalism.
Speaking at the event held at Irabot Bhavan, CPI Central Control Commission member Dr M Nara said that a session of Nikhil Hindu Manipuri Maha Sabha, known as Chinga Session was held on December 29 and 30, 1938 under the leadership of Hijam Irabot.
It was at this session that the word 'Hindu' was removed from Nikhil Hindu Manipuri Maha Sabha.
Irabot removed the word 'Hindu' as he was determined to fight the discrimination and repressive measures perpetuated by the king in the name of Hinduism, Dr Nara said.
The session adopted eight resolutions including launching of a collective struggle against the repressive measures of the kind and the British rulers.
Nikhil Manipuri Maha Sabha became a political party as soon as the king learnt of the resolutions adopted at the Chinga Session, he said.
It was a landmark chapter in the history of Manipur towards a political revolution for democracy and secularism, Dr Nara said.
MSC/CPI secretary L Thoiren, MSC/CPI former secretary L Sotinkumar, CPI(M) secretary Ksh Shanta, RSP secretary Manoranjan and AIFB secretary Khomdram Gyaneshor too attended the event as presidium members, the main feature of which was offering of floral tributes to Hijam Irabot.
