Imphal, January 30 2024:
The Manipur Naga Youth Orga-nization (MNYO) has de- nounced the alleged dese-cration of Govajang Church by armed volunteers.
In a statement, MNYO, said that the desecration of Govajang Church was an act of sacrilege and profanity that directly offends the Christian community.
Words are insufficient to condemn and deplore the violation as a place of worship is typically respected and left untouched even during the time of war, the Naga organisation said.
The MNYO further said that it is very unfortunate to witness valley volunteers making a mockery inside a Church by holding Bible a holy book for Christians.
"This behavior is deeply saddening and unfortunate, causing distress within the Christian community and potentially fostering grievances among both Christians and non-Christians," it added.
Expressing 'profound distress at the reprehensible act' specifically targeting religious institutions, the MNYO continued that the incident at Govajang Church, widely disseminated through a viral video, showcases the destruction and mockery within the sacred premises.
It went on to state that the incident at Govajang Church is nothing but a blatant violation of the fundamental principles of religious freedom and co-existence.
Manipur, known for its rich diversity, harbors a significant Christian population within the Meitei community, the Naga organisation said and maintained that the Govajang Church incident not only poses a threat to the social fabric but also undermines the region's long standing tradition of harmonious coexistence.
The MNYO also emphasized that the 'wanton' destruction of religious institutions, irrespective of the faith they represent, cannot be justified.
"We feel that this conflict is not a religious issue or fight.
It transcends religious boundaries and is an assault on the principles of peace and coexistence," the organisation added.
Appealing to all parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint and engage in peaceful dialogue for a resolution that respects the rights and dignity of every community, the MNYO also urged the relevant authorities to swiftly investigate the Govajang incident, hold those responsible accountable, and implement concrete measures to prevent further acts of religious 'intolerance' and violence.
"The MNYO remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting understanding, respect, and unity among the diverse communities in Manipur.
We firmly believe that peace is the only path forward for a prosperous society," it concluded.
