13,000 students trained under Bharatiyam prog

With the concept of integration of sports and education under the programme Bharatiyam, more than 13,000 students were trained in 2015-16 .
The objective of this programme, Bharatiyam is to create physical fitness awareness amongst the student community.
This programme has been taken up at all levels i.e school, district and State with an aim to involve maximum numbers of students.
The Department of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of Manipur has been implementing compulsory physical education progra-mme in educational institu- tions by deputing physical education teachers.
Besides imparting knowledge in health and physical education and sports, mass physical fitness programme, popularly known as Bharatiyam has also been taken up.
School and district level Bharatiyam training and competition programmes were held regularly.
The Department has so far trained 13,000 students under the scheme.
School level Bhara-tiyam training programme for the year 2015-16 was conducted at two centres in each district and subdivisional headquarters during the month of November/December 2015 and the State level Bharatiyam competition, 2015-16 was also held at Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal in February 2016 .
Under Bharatiyam programme, in-service Physical Education Teachers (PETs) were also trained for one month in February 2016.Training the in-service PET(s) in various Bharatiyam elements will enable them to impart training to the students.
It may be mentioned that the scheme of Bharatiyam was launched by the Sports Authority of India during 1980 with the objective of making the students physically and mentally fit.
The Department has been implementing various sche-mes/programmes for promo- tion of games and sports in the State since its inception by organizing district and State levels school games meets in various age groups and disciplines under the guidelines of School Games Federation of India.
The main objective for promotion of games and sports is to have sports consciousness from the grass root through participation in the National/International meets held at different parts of the country.
Besides, teams are sent for participation in the Subroto Mukherjee football tournament and JN Hockey tournament.
The Department organises State Inter School Games in different disciplines both for boys and girls in different categories.
The Department is also planning to organize short term residential training courses in Kang/Mukna and Yoga for students at Indoor Stadium and Kangshang respectively as a regular programme to promote indigenous games and Yoga which are included in school curricula.
The Department of YAS has been implementing a coaching programme named Regular Coaching Centre (RCC) for organizing a non-residential coaching to the players of different age group (ie from grassroots to International level) with the latest technique as well as systematic and scientific way of coaching under the supervision of experts/trained coaches of the department since 2002 in 25 disciplines (for six months each ie April to September and October to March) throughout the year.
The YAS has been implementing a scheme for grant of financial assistance to Manipur Olympic Association, State and district level sports associations for participation in different National/Zonal/International/Hosting of National championship at Imphal and for organization of district /State level championship and non-residential coaching prior to National championship and improvement of Mapal Kangjeibung.
Realising the importance of optimum utilization of youth energy in nation building activities, the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports has instituted the Youth Award scheme in order to recognize/honour outstanding young persons and voluntary organizations engaged in the field of youth work.
State Award to outstanding youth workers, State award to outstanding voluntary organisations, district award to outstanding youth workers and district award to outstanding voluntary organisations are the awards confer to the youths and the awards accompany cash.
It may be mentioned that Youth Affairs and Sports Department was bifurcated from the Education Department on April 16, 1980 and since then, the Department has been implementing various programmes for the promotion of games and sports and various youth welfare programmes in the State.
