Imphal, February 28 2016:
Ex-DGP Y Joykumar has stated that suspension of five police personnel for frisking and checking a team of Naga Students' Federation (NSF) at Mantripukhri lacked rhyme and reason.
Speaking to media persons at his Naoremthong residence today, Joykumar said that he served in BSF on deputation outside the State for eight years.
At that time, the impression of Manipur Police at Delhi was obnoxious.
Manipur Police were seen as timid and spineless.
They were seen as a hopeless force who surrendered and gave away their weapons to militants.
Joykumar said that he saw no change in Manipur when he came back after deputation.
Soon, several measures were initiated in consultation with senior police officers so as to transform Manipur Police into a dutiful and efficient police force.
Political leaders too extended cooperation towards the new initiative.
A few years later, Manipur Police was transformed into one of the best police forces.
Soon, they earned due respect and started working together with army and paramilitary forces.
It was Manipur Police who stopped NSCN-IM General Secretary Th Muivah from entering Manipur.
It was a challenge but they faced the challenge boldly for their morale was high, recounted the ex-DGP.
Frisking and checking exercises are inevitable in view of the law and order situation prevailing in the State.
Suspension of five police personnel for checking/frisking NSF members should be seen as an act of giving to the pressure exerted by NSF, he remarked.
Questioning whether the State Government is controlled by NSF or should not it take a concrete decision, Joykumar asked how could one discharge his duty if he should be humiliated for doing his duty.
This is nothing short of selling out Manipur by the incumbent Government and it would be serious blow to the morale of Manipur Police.
It would be in the best interest of the State as whole to revoke the suspension order of the five police personnel, he added.
