Imphal, March 24 2017:
Strongly condemning the induction of MLA Ashab Uddin of Jiribam Assembly Constituency as a Parliamentary Secretary, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has called a 17 hour State-wide general strike from March 25 midnight.
Announcing the call in a press meet held at its office located at Sagolband Moirang Leirak today, DESAM general secretary Nameirakpam Edison said that the general strike was called as a mark of protest against the induction of a non-indigenous person as one of the Parliamentary Secretaries.
He clarified that the agitation launched by the student body is not intended only against Ashab Uddin but is against the indigenous people whose presence in the State has posed a serious threat to the existence of indigenous people.
He demanded the BJP-led Government to remove the MLA from the post of Parliamentary Secretary (Minority & MOBC, Commerce & Industries) .
Edison asserted that the agitation launched by DESAM is to safeguard the indigenous people from the incessant influx of migrants into the State.
It may be mentioned that Ashab Uddin contested in the 11th State Legislative Assembly election from Jiribam Assembly Constituency as an Independent candidate.
He won the seat by securing 8189 votes much ahead of the 6539 votes secured by former Minister and veteran Th Devendra who contested the election as a Congress candidate.
