Imphal, July 23 2011:
Manipur has been making commendable progress in listing driving licences and vehicles for which Smart Cards have been issued in the national register.
According to information received from Transport Department, the national register is an initiative of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to maintain a centralised database about the driving licences and registration certificates of vehicles compiled by different states.
At all India level, driving licence component and registration certificate component of Smart Card system was handled by Vahan and Sarathi respectively.
Driving licences and registration certificates given in the form of Smart Cards by Vahan and Sarathi would be enlisted in the national register and all these information would be uploaded in a website.
Along with it, one can download application forms for driving licence and registration certificates from the website.
In place of the current practice of coming physically to the office of Transport Department for obtaining and submission of registration forms etc, one can now download application forms and submit the same through internet by paying the specified fees in e-payment mode.
Driving licences issued by DTO Imphal East, DTO Imphal West, DTO Thoubal, DTO Kangpokpi, DTO Churachandpur and DTO Bishnupur have been included in the national register.
As for registration certificates, Imphal West, Churachandpur and Kangpokpi have been enlisted in the national register.
The remaining DTOs of Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur would be incorporated in the national register by March next year.
Machine Readable Zone embedded in the Smart Cards for driving licences and registration certificates is of size 4 kb.
As such, the zone does not have space for information details.
The same zone would be upgraded to the size of 64 kb so that detailed information can be provided in each Smart Card, conveyed the source.
