ST demand reiterated

The demand to enlist Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list took the centre stage at the annual general meeting of the Assam unit of the World Meetei Council at Hojai, Assam today.
The meeting was graced by international awardee Laisom Gulap as chief guest and WMC Assam unit vice president Taoram Nabakumar as president, said a statement issued by WMC (CEC) assistant secretary general Sarat Thiyam Delegates from the WMC Manipur unit, as well as Assam and Nagaland units also attended the meeting, the Council said.
During the meeting, U Kunjo, president of the WMC Manipur unit emphasized the urgent need for the Meitei community to be included in the Scheduled Tribe list of the Constitution.
He reiterated that the only way forward for the Meitei community to survive is to secure this inclusion.
All speakers at the meeting highlighted the critical importance of global unity among the Meitei people to confront the aggression from immigrants.
The meeting also unanimously condemned the actions of the Manipur Government against the WMC and called for immediate cessation of its efforts to dismantle the Council, it added.
Furthermore, the assembly demanded that the Manipur Government withdraw its efforts to arrest its chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam.
