Govindas assures exposure to weavers

The third two-day buyer-sellers' meet cum exhibition of handloom fabrics was kick-started today at MFDC Auditorium, Palace Gate.
The event is being organised by the Department of Commerce and Industries, Govt of Manipur under the aegis of Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India.
The inaugural function of the buyers-sellers meet cum handloom fabrics exhibition was graced by Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam and Principal Secretary (Com & Ind) O Nabakishore as the chief guest and president respectively while the guests of honour included former Director (Commerce and Industries) Dhiraj Yumnam; Director (Sericulture) Ginjamang Simte; and Director (Com & Ind) V Tualthang.
Speaking at the occasion, Govindas Konthoujam said there are 66 clusters in the State under the Integrated Development Scheme of the Central Government.
The Minister promised of providing various assistances to handloom weavers under the scheme to all the clusters.
Govindas added that products of handloom weavers would be exhibited outside the state so that they get more exposure to the outside markets.
He therefore urged the weavers to stop handloom weaving as time-pass activities but to take it seriously as their profession.
Exuding faith that handloom products would go a long way in solving the economic problems of the State, Govindas also proudly maintained that many doctors, engineers, politicians, professors, IAS officers and various other high ranking officers have been produced in the State by many women who took up handloom weaving as their profession.
The Minister also urged the weavers to strictly maintain work culture while urging them to work hard.
Attributing the absence of a proper policy on handloom as the factor responsible for the retarded growth of Handloom in the State, Dhiraj Yumnam stressed on the need to formulate a State policy on handloom so as to enhance the produces qualitatively and quantitatively.
All the 66 clusters opened their stalls in the exhibition while around 16 buyers from outside the State registered their presence.
