Gurgaon, May 21 2015 :
An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with Gurgaon police on Wednesday allegedly remarked that women from the "North East" indulge in prostitution, leading to a huge uproar during a protest against the assault of three youngsters from Darjeeling in Gurgaon on Saturday night.
Robin Hibu, the Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police and Nodal Officer of North East cell, had to intervene in the matter.
Around 12 noon on Wednesday, a group of 100 youth, including girls, from various States in North East India was protesting outside the DCPs office in Gurgaon's Sushant Lok locality in support of the three youths from Darjeeling who were assaulted in Gurgaon's Nathupur locality on Saturday.
"We had assembled at the DCP's office to register our anger over the delay by Gurgaon police in the case of severe assault of three Darjeeling boys.
We were peacefully sitting on the dharna for around 10 minutes or so when some police personnel, including an ASI rank officer, started using abusive language to humiliate us," said Lobsang, one of the protesters.
"This Assistant Sub- Inspector was particularly vocal during the entire incident and said all North Eastern girls residing in Delhi-NCR region were prostitutes.
The ASI said that North Eastern girls work in massage centres and are involved in prostitution," he said.
Sources said the comment was preceded by a heated exchange of words between the protesters and the policemen.
The protesters were demanding the police to expedite the investigation when the ASI allegedly made the comment.
The protesting youngsters immediately objected to the comment, even leading to a minor scuffle with the policemen present there.
As the situation became tense, the ASI reportedly "ran away" from the DCP office.
Gurgaon Police Commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk has, meanwhile, assured Robin Hibu about a detailed investigation into both the cases.
Gurgaon police are yet to identify the ASI who allegedly made the comment.
