Imphal, November 20 2021:
For the first time in North-East India, Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) successfully performed an ABO-incom-patible kidney transplan- tation on October 26 .
Speaking to media persons at Langol this afternoon, SHRI chairman and managing director Dr Khundongbam Palin said that kidney transplantation is usually done when the blood groups of the donor and the receiver match (ABO compatible) .
Nonetheless, a 28-year male underwent ABO-incompatible (ABOi) living- related kidney transplantation on October 26 at SHRI.
The patient's blood group was O positive, whereas the donor's (his mother) blood group was A positive.
The patient was preconditioned with immuno- suppressants, followed by removal of the anti-A antibodies in the patient with Immuno-adsorption columns.
After ensuring a satisfactory antibody titre, the kidney transplantation was performed.

Post transplantation, the patient has good diuresis and his graft continued to function normally.
He had a rapid improvement in his well-being and was discharged with a normal graft function seven days after the operation, Dr Palin said.
Around 2.20 lakh people need kidney transplantation in a year in India but only around 7500 people are fortunate enough to undergo kidney transplantation, he said.
Mismatch between the blood groups of the donor and the receiver is one fundamental factor for the very low rate of kidney transplantation recorded across the country.
Moreover, there is no culture of donating organs from dead persons in India including Manipur.
As many as eight organs can be removed from a brain dead person if the time and situation is favourable, he said.
Almost 90 per cent of transplantation of organs in India is done between living persons and only 10 per cent is done between a living person and a dead per- son, he said.
Dr Palin said that 56 kidney transplantations have been done at SHRI since August 14, 2016, the last one being ABO incompatible kidney transplantation.
The team which successfully performed ABO incompatible kidney transplantation comprised of Dr Guliver Potsangbam, Director & Consultant Nephrologist; Dr Somorendro Paonam, Consultant Urologist & Renal Transplant Surgeon; Dr Mahele Maharabam, Consultant Urologist; Dr Devendra Khwairakpam, Consultant General & Laparoscopic Surgeon and Dr Heirangkhongjam Ranjana Devi, Consultant Transfusion Medicine.
