Imphal, August 20 2015 :
Drivers of two water tankers were seve-rely beaten up by some un- known persons at Khurai Sajor Leikai at around 9.40 pm yesterday.
In a statement, All Mani-pur Road Transport Drivers' and Motor Workers' Union has strongly condemned the incident.
The union said that Mayanglambam Basan (22) of Kakching Khunou Uma-thel presently staying at Khurai Thongam Leikai and Thangjam Boynao (25) of Lamlai Makha Leikai were trying to contact some people on phone on reaching Khurai Sajor Leikai after unloading water at the houses of some customers when they were thrashed from their back by some inebriated persons.
The attackers asked the duo whether they did not know bandh was enforced at the area, the union said.
The unknown persons also broke the headlights, wind shields, side glasses and back lights of the two vehicles.
Boynao was hospitalised after the incident, the union said.
Urging all concerned not to harass water tanker drivers who are rendering service day and night to the people, the union said that water tankers come under essential services and they must be given free passage even if any bandh is enforced.
