Imphal, July 20 2024:
Denouncing pothole-filled dilapidated section of Imphal-Yairipok road from Kongba Bazar Thongkhong to Keirao Salam, locals have blocked the road indefinitely starting this morning.
People thronged the road today morning and blocked the road using logs, bamboo and other obstacles.
They burnt logs and other materials in the middle of the road and prevented movement of all vehicles except emergency services.
This, they said, is a response to the Government and authorities' failure to repair and reconstruct the road despite repeated appeals.
The people said they have already approached authorities concerned including the Chief Minister, the Works Minister and PWD many times.
Leinin Hirom, convenor of All Kongba Road United Clubs' Organisation, said the organisation along with the people had earlier issued a deadline to repair and reconstruct the road to the authorities concerned.
Imphal-Yairipok road is an important road that runs through many Assembly Constituencies, and people of the region depend on it for their livelihood, he said.
The road, however, has been left ignored for a long time, and is now filled with potholes.
The pathetic condition of the road has caused many road accidents endangering the lives of the com- muters and as well as locals, he said.
The road must be repaired at the earliest.
The Government and authorities concerned must first issue a time-frame to start and complete the road reconstruction work.
Until an exact time-frame is given, people will not lift the bandh, he said.
Nonetheless, schools, emergency and essential services like water, electricity, fire and health, and religious rituals and media will not be affected by the bandh, he added.
