BJP forges ties with regional parties in Nagaland ahead of polls

New Delhi, January 20 2013 : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced alliances with regional parties in the North Eastern States of Nagaland and Meghalaya and Tripura.

Senior BJP leader Ananth Kumar said in New Delhi that in Nagaland, which goes to polls on 23 February, the BJP would contest under the leadership of current Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

"An alliance has been formed Democratic Alliance of Nagaland.

The present Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will lead it.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, the NDF (National Democratic Front) and the JD (U) will contest elections under his leadership," said Kumar.

"In Meghalaya, the Bharatiya Janata Party is in talks with Purno Agitok Sangma-led National People Party (NPP) for the electoral alliance.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has selected candidates for the seven seats," added Kumar.

"Similarly in Tripura, the Bharatiya Janata Party has selected 41 candidates out of 60 seats," he said.

All three states have 60-member assemblies and counting will take place on 28 February.
