Imphal, November 19 2021:
The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has stated that the hike in transportation charges and fares has an adverse effect on students and urged the State Government to look into the matter at the earliest.
Speaking to media persons at DM College campus, AMSU vice-president Laishram Athouba Meitei stated that many schools and colleges have resumed physical classes following a directive from the Education Department.
However, many students are not able to attend classes due to charging of exhorbitant fares by passenger service providers, he claimed.
Further claiming that the passenger service providers have been defying the order of the Government to limit the number of passengers to only 50 per cent of the seat capacity in view of the Covid pandemic, Athouba decried that the State Government has not been implementing its own order effectively.
Asking why the Government is not properly regulating the transportation charges in the larger interest of all, Athouba asserted that it is better for the 'non-performing' Transport Department to be abolished.
What has the Education Department arranged for the students specially from the remote places who could not attend classes due to the hike in transportation charges, Athouba asked and urged the Government to consider reopening hostels by formulating effective rule and regulation.
Informing that a discussion programme for passenger service providers, school bus and van service associations would be held on November 22 at AMSU office, Athouba urged all stakeholders to attend the programme.
