Imphal, February 19 2021:
For the first time in the State, an Anganwadi worker who was injected the first dose of Covishield vaccine on February 12 at Kumbi PHC died at Moirang CHC this morning.
The deceased has been identified as one Naorem (O) Sundari Devi (48) w/o N Roken Singh of Kumbi Terakha (Kumbi Municipal Council Ward No 9) .
Aggrieved by the sudden death of the woman, family members and a large number of local people including fellow Anganwadi workers marched to the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Bishnupur and the CMO, Bishnupur.
According to information received from family members, Sundari had no health complaint before she was injected with the Covishield vaccine.
However, she complained that she was not feeling well on the evening of February 12 after she was injected with the first dose of Covishield.
Soon she was taken to Kumbi PHC but there was no doctor.
Sundari was then taken to Moirang CHC where her blood pressure was found to be low.
There she was administered an IV solution.
As she regained some strength after the IV solution was injected, Sundari was brought home.
On the same night, some blisters or bumps could be seen emerging on Sundari's skin.
On the next day, the bumps or blisters spread to different parts of the body and she felt an acute sense of itching.
A couple of days later, Sundari was taken to Kumbi PHC and she was sent back with a prescription of anti-allergy pills.
Sundari's condition grew worse this morning and she was being taken to a hospital at Imphal.
As she experienced breathing difficulty on the way, she was taken to Moirang CHC.
Although the doctors made all efforts and gave artificial (medical) oxygen, she expired at around 7 am.
According to fellow Anganwadi worker Moirangthem Rashe Devi of Kumbi Terakha, eight of them including Sundari went for Covishield inoculation on February 12 but one of them was not given the jab as she had a small kid.
Rashe said that she suffered mild fever after the Covishield injection but it is now over.
Another Anganwadi worker appealed to the authorities concerned not to force or coax anyone for Covid vaccination if he or she is not willing enough.
Questioning if the Government is ready to take responsibility for any fatality which occurs in the aftermath of Covid vaccination, the Anganwadi worker further appealed to the authorities to check health conditions thoroughly before she/he is injected with the vaccine.
Sundari is survived by her husband, two sons and a daughter.
On the other hand, a team of Moirang police has deposited the corpse at RIMS mortuary.
