Imphal, October 18:
The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has set its eye on providing at least 4000 new telephone connections in remote and poorly connected villages by December this year.
Disclosing this to The Sangai Express, today, the Deputy General Manager J Lunkim, ITS, said that the new telephone connections will be provided with the aid of Wireless on Local Loop (WLL) and micro wave towers located at Bishnupur, Thoubal, Moreh and Kakching will be used for implementing the project.
The WLL is a unique technology in the sense that no wires are necessary to set up the connection.
Lunkim further said the BSNL has all the necessary gadgets to implement the project but instructions and guidelines are yet to be received on how to allot the facility to the public.
He reiterated that the project will help in connecting the remote and far flung villages with the rest of the world.
The officer said ever since the Telecom Department was corporatized development of the department has somewhat slowed down.
The corporation instead of focusing on development is more keen on maintenance.
Touching upon the job hazards faced by the employees of the Corporation, Lunkim said Manipur is a difficult situation for the employees to discharge their duties.
Without elaborating Lunkim appealed to the people to understand the difficulties faced by the employees.
To a query when other districts, save for Imphal and Churachandpur, would get the internet facilities, Lunkim said internet facilities are given to all districts which have micro wave sub stations, it is merely a question of lack of subscribers.
Access code number 172233 is provided to micro wave sub stations to get the internet facilities, added the officer.
On the outstanding telephone tariff due from the public and Government institutions, Lunkim said the total amount to be realized till last month was over Rs 22 crores.
