Imphal, October 16:
A suspected cadre of the underground KNF (MC) was killed in a fierce encounter of troops of the 15 Jat Regiment in the early hours today at Mongyang village, about2 km south of Sapermaina police station, official sources said.
A 303 rifle was recovered by the troops from the deceased.
An official source said raids were conducted in Mongyang and its adjacent areas early this morning following a tip-off on the presence of suspected underground elements.
While conducting operations in the village at around 3 am today, a column of the 15 Jat Regiment, based at Leimakhong, was fired upon by some unidentified armed persons who were apparently taking shelter there.
This resulted in a heavy exchange of fire, during which one of the suspected underground cadres was shot dead.
Security sources said around five or six underground cadres, suspected to be KNF (MC), are believed to have been taking shelter in the village.
However, all the others managed to make good their escape.
Troops continued operations in the village, and conducted verification of the villagers, but there are no reports of any arrest.
Later the deceased was identified as one Satgoulein Khongsai, 20, a resident of Chalwa village.
