PWD set to verify quarters' occupants

Imphal, July 16 2019: The Public Works Department (PWD) is all set to verify whether its quarters located at different places of Imphal are occupied by genuine allottees or other people.

On the other hand, around 50 Churches have been constructed within the premises of PWD quarters in total defiance of an order passed by the Supreme Court.

Sources informed that a verification drive would be carried out starting from July 20 till August 5 to ascertain whether PWD quarters are being occupied by genuine allottees or other people.

Relevant documents would be examined in the course of the verification drive.

PWD set to verify quarters' occupants

The PWD Building Division No 2 EE has issued a notification today directing all allottees not to leave their quarters during the verification drive.

The notification also spelt out the areas where the verification would be done.

The areas/quarters notified for verification are Tribal Colony Sanjenthong, Babupara, Langol Housing Complex, Type 4 Below at Lamphel, Majorkhul, DSC Campus, 2nd MR, National Game Village, Type 5, Type 6 and Type 7 quarters of Lamphelpat.

Any unauthorised extension or new construction at the PWD quarters would not be allowed.

If any such extension or new construction is found, the same would be dismantled and the occupants would be evicted, said the sources.

It said that the verification drive would be carried out every year as a routine exercise.

The sources further informed that around 50 Churches have been constructed within the premises of PWD quarters located at different places of Imphal area.

Although there is a Supreme Court order which says that all Churches built within Government quarters must be removed, authorities concerned have been overlooking the matter as it pertains to one's religion and faith.

Politicians, IAS officers and IPS officers have been shielding construction of Churches within the premises of PWD quarters and this is one main reason for the Government's failure to remove the Churches, said the sources.

If these illegal constructions are not shielded by politicians and bureaucrats and police officers, they could be removed without any hassle, conveyed the sources.

The areas/quarters where Churches have not been built are 2nd MR, Babupara, Sanjenthong, DSC Campus and Majorkhul.

Churches on the other hand have been built at all other quarters and their premises.

The verification drive would be carried out everyday from 6.30 am to 7 am and all the allottees should be present at their quarters with all relevant documents during this period, according to the notification issued today.
