Imphal, December 11 2019:
MPCC vice president T Mangibabu has conveyed that the Congress party will never accept the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) under any circumstances.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan today, Mangibabu said that the Congress party has been strongly opposing the CAB both at the State and the Centre as the Bill poses a grave threat to the indigenous people of the North East region, and Manipur as well.
Pointing out that Rahul Gandhi even tweeted that the Bill is designed for ethnic cleansing of the North East region, he questioned if an Inner Line Permit System will even be able to protect the people from CAB.
Even States with ILPS like Nagaland has not been able to fend off the rapid influx of outsiders.
As such, the enforcement of ILPS in Manipur will not be able to prevent illegal immigrants from pouring into the State, he added.
The CAB is being debated in the Parliament as an unconstitutional and discriminatory Bill and the Congress party is also strongly against such Bill, he said.
Mangibabu continued that around 90 lakh people have been classified as outsiders during the NRC process in Assam and stressed on the importance of ensuring that CAB is not passed reasoning that the said people might decide to infiltrate into Manipur.
He further explained that the protest by the people, CSOs, student organisations against CAB is not instigated by any political party but is the result of the threat posed by the Bill.
