RIMS fined

The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) to pay a total of Rs 22,24,000 over the death of a woman after childbirth in 2016 .
The judgment was announced on October 21 last by Commission acting president Th Saimon Singh and members N Banikumar Singh and M Premila.
The case was taken up by the Commission as case number 1 of 2017 based on a complaint lodged by one Thokchom Somorendro (35) of Khurai Sajor Leikai.
Reportedly, Somorendro's wife Th Kheroda died on July 6, 2016 .
The respondents of the case included then Registrar of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Dr Laishram Trinity, then Senior Resident Dr Nandeibam Yohen, then Senior Resident of Anaesthesiology Department Dr Konsam Jina, then RIMS Director and Medical Superintendent.
The last hearing of the case was held on February 14, 2024, following which the judgment and order were kept on reserved for months.
The judgment was announced on October 21, 2024 .
The Commission said that the fourth, fifth and sixth respondent should pay the money as compensation within three months from the announcement of the order.
The money is to be deposited at the registry of the Commission first.
The Commission said that the respondents should pay an interest of 9 per cent per annum if they fail to release the money within three months.
The Commission clarified that they took time in announcing the judgement due to the Covid pandemic, crisis in Manipur and shortage of staff of the Commission.
Th Suresh, the complainant said that the health of his wife deteriorated after delivering a child at RIMS on July 5 .
She died on July 6, Suresh said.
Saying that an enquiry committee was set up to probe the death following a massive protest by civil society organisations, he added that the committee found lapses on the part of Dr L Trinity, Dr N Yohen and Dr K Jina during the treatment.
In his complaint, Th Suresh sought a compensation of Rs 97,20,000 .
