Imphal, December 10 2024:
Even as migratory birds have started returning to the majestic Loktak Lake for winter, the Tufted Pochards - locally known as Nganu Sadaang - have made a comeback after nearly four decades.
Joining the Tufted Pochards are a diverse array of feathered visitors, including the elegant Red-crested Pochard (Thoidingnam Kokngang), tranquil Gadwall (Thoidingnum), Common Coot (Porom), striking Great Crested Grebe (Kumjengbi), vibrant Ferruginous Pochard (Eruppi Mitngoubi), cheerful Lesser Whistling Duck (Tingi), graceful Northern Shoveller (Nganu Khara), rare Mandarin Duck (Sana Nganu), and the delicate Bronze-winged and Pheasant-tailed Jacanas (Thamnachenbi and Yen Pouraba).
Among this year's remarkable sightings, the return of the Tufted Pochard (Nganu Sadaang) stands out as a historic moment, seen after an absence of nearly four decades, said Loktak Development Authority Chairman M Asnikumar.
The Tufted Pochard, with its striking plumage and rarity, symbolizes resilience and hope.
Its return highlights the improving ecological health of Loktak Lake and serves as an encouraging indicator of conservation efforts, he said.
Meanwhile, the Loktak Development Authority has appealed to the fishing community and people around the Lake to help protect the winter visitors and check illegal hunting activities.
The LDA appreciated waterbird conservationists Kumam Jugeshwore Singh, RK Birjit Singh, Kh Brajesh Singh and voluntary organisations such as the People for Animal, Unique Wildlife Protection Committee, Environment Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum, United Committee Thanga for their wildlife conservation efforts.
