Imphal, August 10 2024:
The All Naga Traders' Association, Manipur (ANTAM) has vehemently condemned the August 7 burning of newsprint and printing materials at Kangpokpi, and urged authorities concerned to arrest all those involved in the incident.
At Manipur Press Club, Imphal today, ANTAM advisor Jurist Abonmai said the association takes the incident very seriously and the association wants the authorities concerned to arrest all culprits by August 15 .
Besides acting against the culprits who burnt and destroyed the newsprint, Abonmai said the Government must at the same time take immediate steps to clear the highways of all illegal checkpoints that have been set up to collect illegal taxes from vehicles.
ANTAM has been in the forefront in bringing in medicines including life saving drugs to Manipur.
However, amid the conflict, the transporters often have been harassed on the highways, Abonmai said.
When the transporters have been subjected to harassment on the highways, the Government has not taken up any concrete measures for their safety and security, and this is very unfortunate, Abonmai said.
The Government must also take up prompt measures to secure the highways and ensure safety to drivers and their vehicles.
In addition, a swift complaint redressal mechanism must also be put in place for the transporters, Abonmai added.
The people of Manipur, irrespective of their communities, depend on the goods brought in via the highways.
All the communities must understand the contribution of the transporters and hardships they are facing on the highways, and refrain from harassing them, Abonmai said.
The burning of newsprint on the highway recently should be equally condemned by all sections of the society, and all the culprits involved must be identified and arrested by August 15, said Abonmai.
