Ngamthang inspects Dolaithabi/Thoubal projects

IFC Minister Ngamthang Haokip accompanied by engineers of the department today made spot assessment of the ongoing works on Dolaithabi Barrage Project and Thoubal Multipurpose Project.
The Dolaithabi Barrage Project which would provide irrigation round the year in several hectares of paddy fields in Imphal East district has been completed by 40 per cent.
The Minister was visibly satisfied when he observed that the work on Thoubal Multipurpose Project has been completed up to 85 per cent.
He instructed the relevant officials to ensure that both the projects are completed within the stipulated periods.
The Dolaithabi Barrage Project being constructed over Iril river would be fitted with six gates and has set a target of irrigating around 5500 hectares of paddy fields for double cropping.
Work on the project began in 1992 with the NPCC as the executing agency.
The Government has already set a deadline of commissioning the project by March, 2014. Observing that a labour force of only 45 were being engaged at Dolaithabi Barrage, Ngamthang Haokip directed engineers of his department and other relevant officials to hire greater number of labourers and increase the pace of work so that the project can be completed within the stipulated period.

The Minister and his team then went to the site of Thoubal Multipurpose Project being constructed over Thoubal river.
There too, he instructed the officials as well as labourers to complete the project in time.
While the work on the project's spillway has been completed by 78 per cent, one dam constructed as a component of the project at Keithelmanbi about 12 Kms away from the project site was already commissioned in 1991. Against the total length of 29 Kms, work on the left main canal of Thoubal Project has been completed up to Rs 25 Kms.
The right main canal which should be 28 Kms long is operational up to 8 Kms.
The project is expected to irrigate 21,862 hectares of paddy fields.
Moreover, laying of underground pipes for supplying 45 million litres of potable water to Imphal city on daily basis has been completed.
The project is also aimed at generating 7.5 MW of power.
Maximum efforts are being put in to complete the project by March 2015.The project was first executed in 1980. Later speaking to media persons, Ngamthang Haokip remarked that both Dolaithabi Barrage Project and Thoubal Multipurpose Project were making good progress.
He said that necessary amounts have been incorporated in the budget to pay land compensation to people of Chadong and Lamlai Khunou affected by Thoubal Multipurpose Project.
The Government is working to pay the compensation amount and finish the project's main dam in 2014, he added.
