Children administered deworming tablets at Anganwadi centres, schools

The State level launching of National Deworming Day, organised by Mission Director and staff of SHS, National Health Mission Manipur, was held at different schools and Anganwadi Centres today.
As part of the programme, children between the age of 1 and 19 were administered the deworming tablets at different locations including Ibotonsana Higher Secondary School in Uripok, Imphal West, Anganwadi Centre in Tera Tongbram Leikai Maning, Imphal West, Halley School Soibam Leikai under Imphal East.
Education (S) Director Th Kirankumar, NHM Manipur State Mission Director Dr S Manikanta and Health and Family Welfare Services Manipur Director Dr K Rajo attended the National Deworming Day celebration held at Ibotonsana higher Secondary School as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Education (S) Director Th Kirankumar extolled the launching of National Deworming Day under Mission Director and staff of SHS, National Health Mission Manipur in connection with the launching of the same programme across the nation.
He maintained that the Education Department will put its best effort to make sure that all school going children and students does not miss the deworming session.
Meanwhile, Health and Family Welfare Services Manipur Director Dr K Rajo said that administering deworming tablets will get rid of worms inside the body.
Deworming children with albendazole allows them to better absorb nutrients, combating malnutrition among others.
Children who could not be dewormed today will be administered the tablet on mop-up day ie, February 14, he added.
Presence of helminths parasites, such as roundworm, flukes and tapeworm hinders the immunity of children's body and can lead to different diseases.
He went on to state that the department concerned is planning to deworm nearly 10,800 lakh children.
NHM Manipur State Mission Director Dr S Manikanta informed that after the children are dewormed in the National deworming Day and mop-up day, another deworming phase will be conducted after six months i.e.in August.
World Health Organisation, while conducting a survey in India, found out that 22 crore children suffered from different diseases caused by worms, he said adding that there are no side effects in taking the tablet.
He also highlighted the importance of awareness and sensitisation campaign among the children like keeping clean, washing hands before eating etc.
