Imphal / Ukhrul, February 08 2014 :
An Assam Rifles personnel was killed while four others sustained injuries when suspected RPF/PLA cadres attacked them using explosives at Nampisha village close to Myanmar in Ukhrul district
this morning.
Some personnel of 44 AR, E-Coy on ROP duty were pa-trolling the area on foot when suspected PLA cadres fired a lathod shell towards them at around 6.30 am.
Incidentally, Nampisha village is located 25 Kms South of Chassad police station under Kamjong sub-division.
The lathod shell exploded leaving five AR personnel injured and they were evacuated to Leimakhong military hospital of the Red Shield Division in a helicopter.
The AR troops retaliated but the UG cadres left the scene soon after.
Out of the injured personnel, Rifleman KK Mehta from Ranchi, Jharkhand succumbed to injuries.
Notably, one CRPF jawan was killed at the same site during the last Assembly election.
When enquired to ascertain the news, it was informed that Ukhrul Police wireless station has no wireless connection with Chassad police station.
It was further reported that the local villagers have been caught in a panicky situation because of frequent attacks/en-counters between security forces and UG groups.
Some UG groups particularly RPF/PLA and UNLF/MPA are said to be active in the area as it is easily accessible from neighbouring Myanmar.
