Imphal, February 06 2025:
The Imagi Meira has urged Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Th Satyabrata to exercise his power in the upcoming Assembly session to resolve the protracted crisis besetting Manipur.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club today, Imagi Meira president Sujata Thokchom said that both the ruling and the Opposition MLAs must push for a solution to be worked out in the Assembly session which will have 11 sittings from February 10 to February 24 and forward the resolution of the House to the Centre.
Her appeal highlights the growing need for unity and decisive action among the legislators to end the conflict.
Further appealing to the Speaker to pave a path for normalcy to return by exercising his power, Sujata added that the situation in Manipur is still restive and internally displaced people (IDPs) are still in relief camps.
There is no peace at all in Manipur as many places have become unsafe for people to travel, she said and asked on what ground is the Government claiming that peace has returned in Manipur.
She also said that village volunteers are still on guard at foothill areas to face any attack.
People can assume there is peace in Manipur only when every person irrespective of their ethnicity can move freely anywhere in the State and when all IDPs are resettled at their respective places, Sujata reasoned.
What people genuinely want is the end of the conflict which has been going on since May 3, 2023, she continued.
Sujata went on to say that the legislators can engage in other businesses of the House but priorities should be given to resolving the crisis.
Saying that the Centre and the State Government, however, have been giving inconsistent remarks about the crisis, she added that there is no sign of the Government putting in efforts to end the conflict.
Why is the Centre not inviting all the ruling MLAs for talks to defuse the situation, she asked.
She also asked why the Chief Minister and some Ministers and MLAs went to Prayagraj in a chartered flight to attend Kumbh Mela when Manipur has been burning for over 20 months.
Don't act like a Government of Shamu Makhong, be the Government of Manipur and address the grievances of the people, she appealed.
She also asked the Opposition MLAs to be the voice of the people.
