Imphal, December 04 2015 :
A 16-day activism on Gender Based Violence Campaign was launched today by Women Action for Development (WAD) in collaboration with many other NGOs and civil organisations.
Along with launching the campaign, the case of late Laishram Surmila (Sumila) was re-examined today.
L Surmila d/o L Amuthoi and Bina of Chandonpokpi who was then just 11 years old was found dead on January 31, 2014 at Pheijol culvert a little distance away from her home.
Surmila was missing since January 22 the same year when she left home to herd back their cattle from the local grazing ground.
Surmila was both dumb and mute.
According to post mortem which was given after a gap of around 18 months, there were signs of sexual assault, Amuthoi said and expressed strong suspicion about involvement of police personnel in the murder of his daughter.
WAD secretary M Sobita remarked that Manipur police seemed to be quite inefficient regarding investigation into crimes against women although they are quite efficient in dealing with insurgents.
All those involved in the gruesome murder should be booked and punished according to law after conducting a thorough enquiry, Sobita said.
