Imphal, January 04 2014 :
While sug-gesting that Government of Manipur set up atleast a lodging facility and employ volunteers to guide cancer patients/patient parties intending to undertake treatment at the reputed Tata memorial Hospital in Mumbai, Salutary Service Society (SSS) said it would launch wide campaign on the life threa-tening disease.
Speaking to newspersons at its Brahmapur Aribam Lei-kai office today SSS pro- gramme coordinator L Elena said inconveniences faced by the patient parties from Mani-pur in the Mumbai hospital came to light during a recent training programme attended by some SSS volunteers in the commercial city of India.
Along with emphasising that awareness campaigns on cancer need to be intensified for early detection of the disease, Elena strongly advoca- ted setting up lodging facility in Mumbai like most States that have their respective Bha-vans in the Maharashtra State capital.
Apart from a patient party having to spent about Rs 350 for room on a daily basis and more money for meals the fact that cancer treatment normally requires 6-12 months period eventually leads to spending huge sum of mo-ney, said the coordinator pointing out that in case lodging facility is made available the expenditure will be far less.
Another problem endured by the patient party relates to the language barrier for familiarity in either English or Hindi is essential for proper communication and detailing the patient's ailment.
Suggesting that at the slightest suspicion a patient needs to undertake relevant test for early detection of cancer, Elena reminded that realising the disease at the last stage will have no remedy.
cancer awareness camps are being planned in February last week, further informed the NGO coordinator.
