Imphal, August 03 2020: The imposition of total lockdown from July 24 last has affected lives of small business operators of the State dearly, and among those are mushroom cultivators and dairy farmers, as closure of markets has led to sales dropping significantly.

Speaking to The Sangai Express, one Mongjam Leimaton from Yumnam Khunou who cultivates mushrooms as well as rear cattle said that she started her business along with some of her friends with much promise but the pandemic has ruined all that were expected.

Apart from it being a seasonal fungi, growing mushrooms is costly, she said and added that she also rears cattle for milk as mushroom plantation alone cannot feed her family.

She then said that the imposition of total lockdown has affected her life greatly as she has no other source of income than selling mushrooms and milk.

Leimaton further stated that she began preparation for growing mushrooms by gathering bundles of straw years ago, and expressed concern that all her efforts are likely to go in vain.

Though drying this mushrooms for soup could save some of it from perishing, there is no mushroom dryer in the area, she said.

Huge quantity of milk is also lost daily as the lockdown forced dairy firms to close, she said and added she is finding it hard to cope with the challenges thrown by COVID-19.She then requested the State Government to address the grievances of farmers and small business operators who are badly affected by the coronavirus crisis.
