Imphal, July 02 2013:
The All Manipur Transporters' and Drivers' Forum has called off their cease work strike following assurances from Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam to look into their grievances.
Talking to media persons this evening, Gaikhangam stated that the Government and the Forum came to an understanding after jointly studying the Forum's charter of demands at about 4.30 pm today.
Subsequently, the forum agreed to call of their agitation.
Observing that the demand for setting up highway protection force is reasonable, the Deputy Chief Minister claimed that the State Government has been lobbying with the Centre to deploy two battalions of IRB as highway protection force temporarily.
Disturbances posed by police personnel and illegal taxes collected by UG groups from transporters also figured during the meeting.
All relevant officers of Police Department have been instructed on these twin problems, Gaikhangam stated.
He informed that compensation for 10 trucks vandalised during public agitation would be paid very soon.
Out of 39 trucks vandalised during economic blockades last year, compensation for 29 trucks have been paid already.
Commenting on the arrest of one individual involved in the murder of auto-rickshaw driver Deben, Gaikhangam said that it was a fine example of police acting promptly.
Meanwhile, Transporters' and Drivers' Forum president Y Bupenchandra Ghosh affirmed that the cease work strike has been called at the assurance given by the Deputy Chief Minister.
