Imphal, September 30 2020:
MLA of Sagolband Assembly Constituency, RK Imo who was expelled from the primary membership of the Congress party last month has stated that resignation of 6 Congress MLAs indicates the shaky status of the party in the State.
RK Imo said this during an interaction programme with the people of Sagolband AC held at his residence today.
The MLA who is now an unattached member at the Manipur Legislative Assembly following his removal from the Congress party, said that the recent exodus of 6 MLAs from the Congress party should not be taken lightly as it is an indication that the party is tottering.
RK Imo said that he voted in favour of the BJP sponsored candidate, Leishemba Sanajaoba in the MP election for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in the belief that Sanajaoba, being a leader of both the hills and the valley, is the best candidate.
I did it despite knowing that the Congress party will not take the cross voting lightly, he said.
Even after the Congress party served a show cause notice via the media and corresponding response was made through the media, the Congress party was at a loss on what to, he claimed.
Saying that he was among 16 Congress MLAs present at the Assembly sitting on August 10 and voted in favour of his party when the BJP-led Government raised confidence motion, RK Imo said that his parent party levelled many charges and expelled him without even putting him on suspension.
To directly expel him showed the party's desperation to get rid of him, he said while terming that the Congress party has now been reduced to a single district party.
Reiterating the need for a leadership change within the Congress, RK Imo said that the 6 MLAs resigned from the party after they too became disillusioned with the present leadership of the State Congress.
Congress party is only good at lambasting the MLAs who have resigned from the party instead of introspecting, he said and continued that the Congress party which had 28 MLAs earlier now has only 17 MLAs.
The party which had the number on its side failed to form the Government due to reluctance of the leaders to sacrifice and give chance to the young guns the party had produced, RK Imo said while adding that as a party, Congress is a principled party and need a major revamp in the party leadership so as to regain the popular support and its former glory.
A trust deficit is there within the party and it must have contributed greatly to the recent departure of 6 MLAs, he said.
Questioning how well will the Congress party do in the upcoming general elections and how many strong members are still in the party, the MLA asked whether he will be held responsible too for the likely embarrassment the party will suffer.
As per the 10th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, he is now a an unattached member and cannot shift to any party for the time being, he said and informed his supporters that there will be no by-poll for Sagolband Assembly segment.
"If he is to be expelled for being the son-in-law of the CM and for boarding a flight together with the CM, should the Congress party also monitor family gathering or a daughter visiting her parental home," questioned RK Imo.
He went on to say that he will be joining a new party for the next Assembly elections after due consultations with the people of his AC and supporters and asked all not to believe rumours that the AC is going for a by-poll.
