Imphal, December 31 2021:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) vice president, Dr Kh Ratankumar has stated that the emerging situation in the face of the upcoming election is something 'unusual and grievous'.
Ratan made the statement during a press meet held at the MPCC office at BT Road.
Expressing concern over the recent poll related violence in parts of the State, Ratan said that some mere altercations and fisticuffs were prevalent during earlier election campaigns but sadly gang culture, unusual widespread use of firearms and extreme violence have become a new trend.
What is more interesting is the emergence of armed gangs in black outfits who are constantly threatening voters in Mayang Imphal Assembly segment, he said.
Expressing strong suspicion of involvement of workers of 'BJP' behind the gang, he said that he has managed to identify some of the gang members and added it was very unfortunate for the party to stoop to a new low to sway the mind of the voters.
He opined that assimilation of personalities of questionable educational qualifications and financial backgrounds in politics may be the reason behind the emergence of recent heinous activities and crimes.
Recalling the firing incident of December 23, Ratankumar said that some miscreants suspected to be 'BJP workers' had opened fire on the Congress workers during a house campaign at Mayang Imphal Loupok.
A police then escorted the workers upto Uchiwa but the workers were yet again attacked with several rounds of bullet at Mayang Imphal Bengoon after the police team departed, he recalled.
An FIR was thus registered at Mayang Imphal police station regarding the incident, but no police action has been taken up so far, he rued.
Expressing regret that swift police action can be seen for a mere Facebook post but not for such vicious attacks which can claim lives of many, he demanded the State Government that immediate police action be taken up to book the culprits so as to avoid such violent incidents in days to come.
