Imphal, March 26 2025:
Assam Rifles in coordination with troops of Army as well as local population commemorated Shangshak Day on Wednesday with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at Shangshak War Memorial.
In a release, PRO IGAR (S) informed that the event was organised to pay homage to the war heroes of World War II during the Battle of Shangshak.
The battle stands as a symbol of civil-military cooperation in times of adversity, with not only the personnel of the British Indian Army but also numerous civilians laying down their lives.
Their names are engraved on the Shangshak War Memorial as a tribute to their bravery.
A two-minute silence was observed in their honour.
Following the wreath-laying, an interaction was conducted between the troops and the locals to reflect on the historical significance of Shangshak and reinforce the strong bond between the armed forces and the people of Manipur, it said.
Meanwhile, AR initiated a comprehensive week long rehabilitation programme for village volunteers in Churachandpur district with an aim to reintegrate them into mainstream society by equipping them with essential skills that will enable them secure employment and contribute positively to their communities.
Under the programme, volunteers were provided training in various fields, including musical instruments, masonry and carpentry as well as computer skills.
These vocational courses were designed to provide them with practical expertise and hands-on experience, ensuring sustainable livelihood opportunities both within and beyond the region.
This rehabilitation effort is a crucial step in steering the youth away from the influence of anti-national elements and channelling their potential towards constructive and nation-building activities, said the PRO .
