Imphal, November 10 2024:
Poultry farmers are facing a dire crisis as the highway blockade imposed by Naga People's Organisation (NPO) continues on NH 2, compounded by a recent bandh called by the Southern Angami Public Organisation (SAPO) .
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club here on Sunday, Manipur Poultry Development Association secretary Chongtham Durbatara said that the blockade has completely halted the supply of essential items, especially poultry feed, leading to starvation of countless poultry animals.
He urged those enforcing the blockade to allow poultry feed to pass through, emphasising the urgent need to prevent further loss of livestock.
Many poultry birds have already succumbed to starvation, while others are at risk of disease due to severe malnutrition.
This could soon escalate into a health crisis Within the sector, he said.
He also pointed out that the cycle of bandhs and blockades has severely impacted poultry farming, discouraging new and existing farmers from continuing their operations.
He also expressed dismay over the lack of effort from the government to negotiate the situation.
