Imphal, December 30 2021:
Large number of nurses and multi-tasking staff (MTS), who were recruited on contract basis during the Covid-19 pandemic, stormed the office of Health Directorate on Thursday, protesting the termination of their service contracts.
Speaking to newspersons, one of the protestors conveyed that they were recruited for a period of 3 months on contract basis to work in the Covid Care Centres opened by the Government to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.
After the 3-month period expired, the contract was extended for another 3 months owing to the spike in Covid-19 cases.
Despite the risk to their lives, the nurses and the MTS worked hard, taking care of the patients.
However, at the end of the 3-month period and seeing the dip in Covid cases, it was announced that their contracts have been terminated.
Expressing unhappiness over the apathetic termination, the protestor appealed to the Chief Minister to allow the nurses and MTS to continue working under the state government.
As part of the agitation, the protestors also locked the office of the health director.
