Assam Rifles foils bid to smuggle betel nuts

Assam Rifles foiled a cross-border smuggling of betel nuts worth about Rs 30.24 lakh in general area of New Mongjang road junction, Moreh on Wednesday.
In a release, PRO IGAR (S) informed that during routine checking at mobile vehicle check post along the New Mongjang road junction, troops spotted a vehicle approaching towards New Mongjang village from Moreh.
Realising presence of security forces at the road junction, the driver stopped the vehicle at a distance and kept on waiting, which raised suspicion in the mind of the commander, subsequently directing the troops to move towards halted vehicle taking due precautions.
On seeing the troops approaching them, two persons in the vehicle fled from the site towards the nearby dense jungle area leaving the vehicle.
The troops carried out detailed search of the vehicle and found 70 sacks of betel nuts hidden beneath the cartons of daily use/food items.
The release stated that the seized items along with the vehicle have been handed over to Customs Preventive Force, Moreh for further investigation.
