Imphal, November 12 2021:
While strongly denouncing the act of burning down piled up ready-to-harvest paddy plants by miscreant(s), several organisations have demanded the government to arrest and punish the culprits.
In separate releases, All Manipur Nupi Lup, Manipur Loumi Lup, Nongchup Imphal Loumee-Sinmi Chaokhat Thourang Lup and Apunba Loumi Lup, Thoubal district informed that paddy plants from seven Sangams in the adjoining areas of Sanjenbam Khunou and Koutruk were found torched on the intervening night of November 9 and 10.Such act of undermining the hard work of farmers is inhumane, the organisations condemned.
Similar incidents had also occurred in last year, but the state government is yet to arrest the culprits, they lamented.
While noting that burning of the reaped paddy crop has exacerbated condition the farmers who are already facing the brunt of Covid-19 pandemic, scarcity of water and fertilisers and increasing fuel price, the bodies urged the government to give compensation to the victim farmers so as to mitigate some of their losses.
