Imphal, December 04 2024:
Assam Rifles on Monday conducted an awareness lecture at Chavangphai village in Tengnoupal district in connection with National Pollution Control Day which is observed in memory of lives lost in the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
According to PRO IGAR (S), the event saw active participation from 40 attendees including six women and three children.
The programme underscored the urgency of combating pollution, a critical issue not only in Manipur but across India.
India, which produces over 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually faces severe environmental challenges with 22 of its cities among the most polluted in the world.
In Manipur, rapid urbanisation and deforestation have compounded issues such as water contamination and air quality deterioration, further emphasising the need for collective action, the PRO conveyed.
The Assam Rifles lecture delved into the health hazards posed by pollution, practical waste reduction strategies and ways to integrate eco-friendly habits into daily life.
Local concerns like the management of non-biodegradable waste in Tengnoupal's hilly terrain were addressed making the session particularly relevant to the audience, the PRO added.
