In his message, Governor La Ganesan said, "It was on this day in 1950, that we gave ourselves a Constitution which is the guiding principle of our country.

Despite reservations from various quarters, the experiment of democracy in India has been successful and we are going from strength to strength, respected by other nations" .

He then appealed to the public to revere and offer homage to those founding fathers for their foresight and understanding.

Despite its large population many of whom were illiterate, successive elections have shown the maturity of the electors and the aspirations of the people are reflected in the ballot, the Governor informed, adding that, from a fledgling democracy, the country has become a mature one.

India is poised to become one of the leading nations of the world, the Governor said, while expressing confidence that its progress in science and technology backed by a young and dynamic population will usher the country to greater heights.

According to CM N Biren "we celebrate January 26 every year commemorating the enactment of our Constitution which came into full force on January 26, 1950 and made the country a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic.

"On this historic occasion, let us remember and pay homage to our visionary leaders in the Constituent Assembly who has gifted us our Constitution.

Let us not only rejoice in their glory but also reaffirm our commitment and to strive to make our nation greater and stronger," Biren said.

The country is moving forward under the peo ple-centric governance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and becoming a key leader in the world, he said, adding that India is now steadily embarking on the path to becoming a great power where her voice is heard and respected and seen as an equal partner.

On the occasion of country's 74th Republic Day, Inspector General Assam Rifles (S) Maj Gen Rajan Sharawat and all ranks of Assam Rifles extended warm greetings and best wishes to the people of Manipur.

In a release, PRO IGAR (S) informed that the General Officer exhorted all citizens to reminisce with gratitude and deep reverence the sacrifice of freedom fighters in pursuit of gaining freedom and founders of our nation in establishing a republic.

On this important national day, he called upon citizens from all walks of life to work together towards creating an inclusive society instilled with nationalism, compassion and forbearance that promotes peace and harmony in the state.

He also called upon the youth to rededicate them to the society with a firm resolve to eschew violence and intolerance in all forms and make our great republic, an abode filled with love, peace and tranquillity.

On the other hand, in separate releases, Assembly speaker Th Satyabrata Singh and ministers Basanta, Nemcha Kipgen, Awangbow Newmai and Khemchand stated that Republic Day symbolises the spirit of independent India.

The ministers then wished the people of Manipur peace and prosperity and urged all to salute the sacrifices made by freedom fighters and soldiers who made realise the dream of an independent and unified India.
